Eros Door

Eros Door

I asked Seamus
How to write about love
“Dive into the whale-road,” he said,
pointing me to the language of Beowulf.

“For only a true feeder of ravens
Bent on scribbling lip-streams over
Wine-lusting tear-kissers
Would waste dear night-fire.”

But the great poet-translator
Caved to Greek from Aeneid Book VI
Because they loved in more complex ways
Than the Geats:

“Philia, Agápe, or Eros--you tell me.”
To which I chose Door Number Three.
For through lustful contemplation
One comes to face-to-face with true beauty.
