Ezra
Hang it all, Ezra Pound,
there can be but the one “Sordello.”
But Sordello, and my Sordello?
Lo Sordels si fo di Perpignan!
Ibn Amira Al-Mahzumi authored the
Kitab ta’rih Mayurqa
describing the Aragonian siege of Majorca.
The emir & family were assasinated.
Ibn Amira’s daughter married a
wealthy Catalan who settled in Majorca.
Our troubadour, half Catalan,
half Moor, came from that union.
His monk-like devotion to love rhymes
conferred upon him the moniker
“celibate,” but he was not.
Fast forward to 2019.
Our hero speaks Arabic and Catalan,
albeit in ancient forms.
People think he’s from the
countryside, but actually he’s
from 739 years back.
His singing voice is rusty, but
he learns guitar when he’s not
washing dishes for a bar centrally
located in Perpignan’s central square.
Troubadours rely on noble patrons,
but in our hero’s case, there are none,
so he tries crowdfunding, to no avail.
