Makeshift Escape Hatch
It could be Keith Jarrett’s Köln Part 1, or
Pat Metheney’s San Lorenzo, or,
Joni Mitchell’s Cotton Avenue, or
Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes--
Their Sibylline songs,
My own Montpellier Codex,
Shed me of all preoccupation,
Shattering the “shoulds,” and
Take me where clay grows to sculpture and
Flowers paint themselves on
Vermillion canvases;
Where coffee-flavored kisses from
Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter
Remind me that solstices still
Divide the seasons and
Rain, yes, rain, thank God, still extinguishes
Fire.
I'm reminded of Jarabe de Palo:
"En la vida conocí mujer
Igual a la flaca
Coral negro de la habana
Tremendísima mulata."
