Starmaker

Starmaker
(to Roy Hargrove)

No idea who you were
But I knew your music
And the tune I checked in to regularly
For help and guidance

To understand the confusion
Of marking my line in the sand,
Only to have it washed away by the tide
Every moon cycle

To process the jumbled energy
That threw off electrons
At an alarming rate
Causing concern among physicists

To jet me off to that night city
Where I could smile and
Be with her alone in a crowd.
She’d stare back at me and ask “What?”

And I wouldn’t need to say a thing.
